Ma Nature

Flick, Flack and Filmore had waited for this day to hop on a 6X and head for Lake Biwa. They were accompanying mostly booze for the bar at the lake. The driver and his pal rounded out the group heading for the lake.  It was a nice Summer day and the three Fs excitedly shared their plans. About halfway there, an MP jeep came up honking excitedly. Both truck and jeep stopped and the MPs yelled, that a  typhoon was heading for the camp and that they would have to return immediately. Well this was just too much for the guys. Their plans were kaput. You know what's coming next.

There was a case of Four Roses, Bourbon, some soft drinks and beer to be sampled. Flick, Flack and Filmore broke open a few bottles and sampled the good stuff all the way to camp. Flick and Flack held the booze pretty well by the time they arrived at Camp Stafford. Filmore however, was crumpled in a heap with a half smile on his face. Four guys slid him off the truck and carried him to the barracks.

There he got dumped on someone's bunk, out cold. The Typhoon came and blew out windows in the barracks, toppled trees and ripped through some bushes. Four hours passed and Filmore woke up to a soaked floor, with guys mopping

after sweeping up all the broken glass.

Honey Well Traps GI

Bert is taking a late shower and in pops a fully clothed Marv, filling the air with the vile smells of a spilled Honey Wagon. Marv was walking back from the NCO club in Fushimi Momoyama. It was after curfew, midnight, so he was worrying about getting into camp. The sound of an approaching vehicle caused Marv to veer off into a rice field to escape the lights of the vehicle. He thought it to be an MP jeep. He began running and  fell into a Honey Well.    ( A large vat filled with human waste and water for fertilizing the field )

As Marv stands under the shower, clothes on, he tells Bert that as he popped up in the Honey Well he saw the Jeep pass and it was a courier traveling between the two camps. If he had just waited on the road, he could have hitched a ride to camp.

Foolish Field Fiasco

Some of the illustrious leaders at Camp Stafford decided that the peons had it too soft. They needed a field problem to keep them aware that they were in the Army.  Fifty or so guys were taken to a hilly area in the boonies to effect an infiltration to a simulated Mess Hall on top of a hill. It was early Fall and everyone wore field jackets over fatigues. Heavy clouds made the night very black, just perfect for an infiltration exercise.

Just before the spread out troops were to crawl on their bellies up the hill, hand grenades were passed out to use on the tent and equipment there. The grenades were tiny paper bags filled with flour. Anyone getting through the stationed guards near the tent were to smash the bags on the equipment in the tent. The scene was a bunch of guys, prone on the ground with all jacket pockets filled with the "grenades". A heavy drizzle began as the troops moved out. In about an hour and a half, two guys made it through the guards undetected. They reached into their pockets for the grenades and pulled out stringy skeins of soaked paper and dough.  The targets were reached but the grenades couldn't be bigger duds.  There was a hilarious ride back to camp.

Buying Spree

Somebody was always coming up with an angle for saving a buck or Yen. Bucky asked a lady friend if she would join him in some shopping in Kyoto. Bucky knew that the Japanese could usually get a better deal on items in specialty stores. He would leave his friend out of sight of the store and its workers. He would go into the shop, look at various items and not show any interest in the item he wanted. Then he and his friend would go elsewhere for about an hour. Bucky would explain in fine detail the item he had eyeballed  in the store and its relative location to his friend. Bucky then sent his friend back to the shop to actually purchase the chosen item. This system worked pretty well until it was time to use other people if purchases were to be made in the same store.  This process had a short life but it worked.  One never wanted to be seen with the other person in the same area or the covers would be blown.

Idiot's Delight

Herb and Koko carried all the ingredients, including a blanket to a downtown park in Kyoto to have a picnic. They found a desirable place under some trees in a grassy area. While they were walking, Herb had noticed a man in a trench coat behind them. He sensed that they were being followed. When they spread out the blanket and prepared for the picnic, the man disappeared. Actually, where Herb and Koko set up was on a rise in the park and close to a wall that paralleled a walkway about 7 feet below. When they were cleaning up after the picnic, for some unknown reason, Herb went to the edge of the wall and looked down. There was the same guy in trench coat standing very still. Herb reached down, quickly grabbed a handful of hair and jerked upward. The man let out some possible expletives and walked off.  Dumb thing to do? You bet. The guy could have had a gun or other weapon. He may have been the police keeping an eye on things. He could have been just a voyeur waiting for something to happen.
