The front gate depicts the winner of the contest for the unit emblem in its full glory. Shortly after it was put up, a member of the guard force answered the phone, "Black's Bulldogs, Woof Woof Sir", imitating the "Gary Owen sir of the 7th Cav." It was Lt. Colonel Black on the other end of the line and he had dialed a wrong number. As he was going ballistic, the guard hung up and someone else answered the phone for the rest of the shift. The beloved British, 3-1/2 pounder, cannon gracing the flag pole site had about a 1/8" coat of paint in the bore.

Mess Hall
Enlisted Men's Club
Fushimi Playhouse The Fushimi Playhouse came about when Lt. Colonel Black had convinced the powers that be that there were enough bodies on post to warrant a swimming pool. Before the pool was finished, the *&@# hit the fan and the pool construction stopped. The Playhouse was built on the pool foundation. You'll have to guess why the swimming pool got the deep six. The powers that were may have had higher powers to contend with. The Playhouse served as a movie theatre, performance stage for whatever and hall for addressing the troops. Web Master's Note Just South of the 8610 was Camp Stafford where the Mess Hall was the "greasy spoon" compared to the Mess Hall at the 8610. The C.O. was a Captain and the entire camp was more quaint. Too bad I never got to the 8610 when it was completed. |
